Talks

Here at Porfell, we have many wonderful animals that aid us in our educational talks for our visitors. We have Polecats, Giant leopard tortoises, a Royal python, several different species of owls and creepy crawlies. With our special events we have special surprise animals to enthral visitors. There are chances for visitors to actually touch them and have a rare chance to learn much more about these wonderful creatures with whom we share this planet. Not all talks will feature the same animals.

New Arrivals

On the 6th September, we welcomed some new additions to the park. If you visit Lemur-land, you can now see Mara (large relatives of guinea pigs and look a little like small deer) in one of our enclosures. We are also anticipating the arrival of a troop of Marmosets in the next month and we will report when they arrive.

Maasai success!

The recent addition of the African plains and Maasai village at Porfell is a great success bringing many more visitors to the park. This is an adventure into Africa where visitors can experience life in a Maasai village surrounded by and co-existing with wildlife. It brings a new concept to seeing wild animals.

Our Mission

Our Objectives

Porfell has set out to create a unique and sensitive partnership between the unspoilt natural beauty of this rich environment and the practical sensible needs of both animals and visitors.

As Porfell continues to expand and improve creating greater interests and better facilities it will preserve the personal, friendly atmosphere and service.

Within this concept we have a commitment to develop and maintain a special attraction which will embody three main objectives…

Our first objective

We have a mission to provide a safe haven for elderly and problem exotic animals for the rest of their lives. The work of our sanctuary is recognised nationally by zoos, wildlife parks and other organisations.

Here at our animal sanctuary you will see groups of single sex animals, such as Ring-Tailed lemurs. Elderly animals like our dear old brown lemurs in retirement in a nice heated enclosure. You will see some who can breed, like the meerkats.

Not forgetting old favorites like zebra, capybara, owls, lynx and coatis . All enjoy environments created to suit their individual needs. New to the park are Black lemurs – we have registered to become part of the E.E.P. European Endangered species programme; to help these very rare lemurs, ours are past their breeding prime at the age of 27 but are helping us to highlight the plight of the Black lemurs of Madagascar.

All the expenses associated with caring for animals are paid from visitors admission and other sales plus the generosity of animal lovers. There are three ways you could help us to continue with improvements and build new facilities for more animals to be permanently in our care. You could become a Friend of Porfell. Adopt an animal or make a donation.

Entertainment – Education – Conservation
  • It is a place where families can together experience the wonders of nature through observation, stimulation and discovery.
  • Where happiness and joy is in sharing a magic moment of interaction with other creatures.
  • By combining imagination and technology, interesting and innovative displays will make learning fun, bringing greater awareness and understanding of the miracle of life.
  • A programme of conservation ensures the long term protection of our environment and the responsible breeding of endangered species.

We will continue to improve accessibility and management of the ancient woodland so visitors can fully appreciate the abundance of wildlife.

It is a place where time is unimportant as you enjoy the peace and tranquility in this natural theatre of life, relax, have fun and at the end take with you the memories of the magic of Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary.

When you have the responsibility for arranging a school outing you need to feel confident about your choice of venue.
Confidence springs from knowledge, and at Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary can meet your needs in two ways:
Firstly, we are open for school parties and are able to provide guided tours on request. We have a computer room in our animal barn. We can provide close encounters with the animals so that both children and adults can get close and personal with creatures such as snakes, ferrets, tortoises, owls etc. We have a wonderful woodland walk where we can talk through native british animals and plants. You can also visit the Maasai village where you can see animals co-existing and learn all about life in Africa as a Maasai member. To book in advance please contact us by email or phone.

Wendy + Jaz the Bengal Eagle Owl
Secondly, staff members directly invloved with the visit are welcome to arrange a free pre-visit. This will give your staff an opportunity to become familiarised with the layout and facilities, enabling them to produce a schedule for their visit.

Our objective is to ensure that staff as well as pupils are enriched by a visit to Porfell. We aim to achieve a balance between education, conservation and entertainment, and to help everyone enjoy the wonders of life thorugh observation, stimulation and discovery.

HISTORY OF PORFELL

Over a period of several years we’ve collected many different animals, then in 1989 we decided to open to the public as a small farm Park. Since those early days, our regular visitors have seen dramatic changes with each year, the addition of more enclosures, animals and facilities, making Porfell a much-acclaimed Wildlife Park and Sanctuary.

Developing the park within our beautiful Cornish countryside has required careful planning, as has the design and build of enclosures taking into consideration all the individual needs of many species of animals in our care.

While building continues – we will always be making changes and improvements. We hope you and your group enjoy your visit and find it rewarding.
